My Son The Adult

November 12th, 2013 at 03:21 am

Yesterday was J's birthday, he turned 18!

On Saturday, he had 3 friends over to spend the night. All four boys seemed to have a good time. On Sunday, his dad picked them all up and they went paint-balling. I had told ex-h I would pay for it, but he reported back that all 3 guests had brought their own money, and that he would pay for J. So, that was a pleasant surprise.

For his birthday, I bought him a smartphone from Republic Wireless, and will be paying the monthly bill. The phone cost $116.55 with tax. My first bill (paid upfront) was $20.34. This is for unlimited talk, text, and data. I will be dropping him from Ting, so there is a savings there to help offset the cost.

I feel so fortunate that both of my children have enjoyed good health and reached adulthood. I know there are many parents who sadly cannot say the same. My life has not gone quite as I had planned, but this is one thing that makes me feel the universe has smiled with favor upon me.

Happy Birthday to your young man! Whatever has happened in my life, however sucky my day, at the end of the day I am so thankful that my girls are healthy and safe. If that's all I'm blessed with, that's enough.

    Happy Birthday to your son!

I am interested in upgrading to a smartphone and the prices you quote sound good to me! I've never heard of Republic Wireless, though. Is it everywhere?

I briefly talked to a Verizon rep who said I would have to pay $60-75 per month to support a smartphone. $20-30 is more like it.

Thank you for the birthday wishes. Smile

I heard about Republic Wireless on the Mr. Money Moustache blog. MMM tried the service and reviewed it on his blog. He said the service was good. The phone I bought was the Motorola Defy for $99 (plus tax and shipping). They will be offering the Moto X for $299 (plus tax and shippping) soon. I believe they intend to phase out sales of the Defy, so if you want one of those you should act soon.

There is no contract, and they have a 30 day money back trial period.

There is a coverage map on their website.

They do have a "refer a friend" deal, which would net us both $19. If anyone intends to give them a try, I would appreciate the referral. My e-mail address is bean_counter_100@hotmail.com.

They have a better deal for smartphones than Ting, but I will be keeping my "dumb" Ting phone for now.

If you scroll to the bottom of the screen in the grey area, you will see a link for "Coverage Map", a link for "Refer a Friend", and other links as well.

So nice to see this blog title, my son will be 16 in about 8 weeks, a milestone as well. He is becoming so mature, I am proud too. But still 2 or so years to be a little scared of navigating girls/sex, beer drinking/driving, and getting started in college and making coursework the priority.

Happy bday to you mom! You made it Smile

thanks for the RW info! how does the Defy phone look? does your son like it? does it have good smartphone features or does it seem dated? i'm trying to decide between that and the new moto-x (whenever it becomes available).

I've never owned a smartphone, and neither has J. But just having seen the phones other people carry, I think it looks like any other android. (That's the correct term, I think). It has a touch screen which you scroll with your finger.

Ms M180 looked up the specs for me, and she said the Defy looked better for J because it has a slot for extra memory sticks, and J likes to play games. The X had larger built-in memory, but no slot for memory sticks.
