The Folks at Progressive are Hilariously Funny

May 6th, 2016 at 07:40 pm

Also this week (it really has been a great week) I received my auto insurance renewal bill. My current insurance company, Mercury, wants $1948.76 for J and I for the next 6 months. This is a $200+ increase from last time.

I decided to get a few quotes online. Geico* will write the exact same policy for $1716.06, a savings of $232.70. Sounded good, but I thought I would let Progressive have a shot at my business. Those folks at Progressive are hilarious! They quoted $2576.76. I had a chuckle and then clicked back over to Geico.

*Geico is owned by Berkshire Hathaway and offers an 8% discount to shareholders. You can own just 1 share of Brk.B (currently trading at $144.xx) and qualify. You can qualify with Brk.A too, but I don't have a spare 220k sitting around. However, I learned this particular discount is not available in California.

Nice tip - I will check out Geico (with the BH purchase) next time we renew.

Wow, that still seems high to me. What kind of cars do you have? We pay about $600 for the insurance on our two main cars. (2015 corvette and 2010 corvette)

    Hi Ima,

It seems high to me too. Smile It isn't the cars which are so expensive, it is the 20 year old single male.

I think you could still do better! Try some of the smaller (hungrier) insurers. I've always heard good things about Amica. Geico's prices were never that low for me.

I know that auto insurance varies (in a big way) from state to state. We moved to PA from LA and I couldn't believe how much our insurance rates decreased - homeowners AND auto. For comparison, we just renewed the auto policy for 6 months for $900, and I have TWO young adult single males (18 & 21 years old). And that's with Progressive - your worst quote. We don't buy comprehensive coverage, but high levels for liability. Maybe that's a difference too. Or maybe California is just expensive.

PS, I am willing to get more quotes. I just now got a quote from Amica. They want to do annual policies. They quoted $3855 for 1 year, which is 1927.50 for 6 months.

Jenn, wow! that is quite a difference. I do carry comprehensive. I think California is high, and I think our area is high. Our #5 spot on this list doesn't help: http://www.businessinsider.com/these-are-worst-cities-in-the-nation-for-car-theft-2015-6

You might want to check with a local insurance broker - someone who will shop all the places for you. That's how we found the home insurance policy for $713/yr (down from the $1160/yr Geico quoted me.)
