Quilts Sewn By My Great-Grandmother

December 23rd, 2015 at 05:02 am

Today I received a package from my aunt who lives on Vashon Island. She sent me two quilts which my great-grandmother made in the 1950s. The quilts were used by my birth mother, her two sisters and one brother during their childhoods.

She wrote a nice letter providing some family history of this ancestor and the early life of her son, who grew up to be the father of my birth mother and her siblings. She told MrsM180 and I this history when we visited last June, but how awesome to have it written down.

I hope I get better at using my phone for pictures.

That is the best gift ever!! And the history along with it is very meaningful.

I have a quilt that I think was made by my great aunt (or step aunt). It just sits in a closet, but I can't imagine getting rid of it! Someday it may get more use. I wish I had a little more history. I should ask my mom about that. Smile

When I was a child, my parents had a hand-stitched quilt made by my great-grandmother, who I never met. We used the quilt whenever one of us was sick. I have memories of being home from school in bed with a few illnesses like pneumonia, with Grammy's quilt on my bed and being cared for by my Mom. It eventually became tattered from overuse, but we have especially sentimental memories, and my brothers and I felt a closeness to Grammy though we never knew her.

    Very special!

I have a quilt that my grandfather made. If there is any one single thing that I actually keep (or even hoard) it's treasures like that. I've got a lot of hand-made blankets.

I too had a very old quilt. It was made by my great grandpa after he returned home from serving in the civil war. We used it so much, it finally fell to pieces. Take good care of it!

My great aunt made lovely quilts. Our family used them and wore them out, never thinking about saving them for the future. I wish I had some of them. I do have a quilt my mother started and my cousin finished for me. It's beautiful. I do use it, but I am careful with it.
