Life and Work Happenings

April 3rd, 2026 at 08:44 pm

Last week I flew to Reno to meet up with my mom, brother, sister-in-law, and two nieces. We rented an Airbnb and had a wonderful time together.  I hadn't seen any of them in 2+ years.

The company I work for was owned by a husband and wife in their 60s.  Unfortunately, he died about 3 weeks ago.  I am uncertain what changes may be coming as a result.  I have been surprised by how sad I am over his death. He was quite a character and apparently grew on me more than I had realized. I'm really going to miss him.

I've been trying to build up my savings and haven't made a whole lot of progress. The trip to Reno and my 2025 federal income tax bill ($1,446) have slowed my progress.  But I continue to plod along and all is well with my modest finances.

Very sorry to hear about your boss Frown
Work relationships can be stronger than we realize; we spend so many hours with these people each day that they often become people you will always remember and care about.

Savings progress will come, hang in there! Things like family are more important than money. You have to balance family and fun along with financial goals. It's great that you were able to see family again after so many years.

A similar thing happened to me at one of my last jobs before retiring: I worked for a small pharma agency run by a husband/wife team, also in their 60s, and the wife passed away. We were all working from home at that point. Eventually, the husband closed the business.I felt for the husband. I imagine it was quite a shock for him.

Ah, I wonder what kind of plan your boss, if any, should something like this happen? And do you yourself have some kind of contingency plan in case she decides to close his business?

I'm so sorry to hear about your boss and good luck with whatever comes up as a result. That's the downside risk of working for smaller companies.

I'm glad you had a good time visiting with your family in Reno.
